Objectives

Social Studies

The students will:

  • Use map elements to identify and interpret natural/physical features of colonial settlements.
  • Describe how geographical characteristics affected the colonial settlements.
  • Explain how colonists adapted to their environment.
  • Determine how geographic characteristics affect choices. (For example, climate guides decisions about food, clothing and shelter.)

Math

The students will:

  • Graph points on a coordinate grid system to place features of their colonial settlement.
  • Use coordinate points to identify features of their colonial settlement and track design revisions.

Science

The students will:

  • Describe ways the colonists could use ideas from science to protect the resources and the environment in relation to their settlement.

English Language Arts

The students will:

  • Use multiple sources to locate answers to questions and integrate information to communicate their findings.

Engineering Design Process

The students will:

  • Use the engineering design process to plan, develop and refine a colonial settlement that can withstand various challenges.
